In 1878, Scottish writer Robert Louis Stevenson stayed overnightat the abbey during his journey through the mountains of the Cevennes. His long walk was immortalised in his book,Travels with a Donkey in the Cevennes. Nothing much has changed since that time as travellers, hikers and pilgrims are still welcome to overnight at the abbey.

The abbey is situated in the Ardèche department of the Rhone-Alpes, in the south of France. St-Laurent les Bains lies between the cities of Marseilles and Clermont Ferrand. The abbey is occupied by a community of Trappist monks, also known as the Cistercians of the Strict Observance. The hospitable monks don’t charge for accommodation and donations to cover the costs involved in an overnight stay are left to the generosity of the individual visitor. This is a working abbey and guests are asked to help with small chores.
