A little dot in a sea of sapphire blue, Malta boasts some of Europe's best swimming beaches. The Knights of St John ruled the country from 1530 to 1798 and are responsible for much of Malta's spectacular architecture, including an unmissable, ornate and grandiose Co-Cathedral (St John's), in world heritage listed Valletta, the capital city. A cruise on the spectacular Grand Harbour is mandatory and the picturesque island of Gozo can be reached in 30 minutes. Jump on a bus and explore Roman ruins, megalithic temples, more world heritage sites and medieval cities.
