More Information
The major attraction within the basilica is the wooden sculpture of the Black Madonna, also known as The Virgin of Montserrat and the Patron Saint of Catalonia.

Other attractions include an art museum, the views, the Escolania (boy's choir,) a daily market and the numerous hiking trails which surround the abbey.

The Abbaye de Montserrat is situated 45 km north-west of Barcelona and can be accessed on via train or car on an easy and interesting day trip. Upon reaching the bottom of the mountain, visitors can travel by cable car or rack railway (cremellera). Whichever way you travel there will be surprise in store at the top.

The abbey’s grand basilica was built around a much revered, 12th century, Romanesque statue of a Black Madonna which attracts numerous pilgrims and visitors.

Enjoy breathtaking views across Catalonia on one of the many hiking tracks further up the mountain. For a great photo opportunity take the walk to St Michael’s Cross from where the monastery can be seen in all its grandeur.

The Montserrat boys choir, l’Escolania de Montserrat, sing at least one religious service on most days (not Saturday). As well there are places to eat, gift and souvenir shops and a daily market where local villagers and farmers sell their wares. To make the most of a visit to Montserrat, plan to spend a night here - you won't be disappointed.

What a wonderful and spiritual place. I return home much fitter (some of those mountain walks are tough), but well rested and contented after a wondrous stay. The apartments are very well-fitted out and the staff attend to every need. Would like to stay on the mountain forever.

Such a peaceful place when the tourists depart in the afternoon. Homely and comfortable apartments - not 5-star - but ideal for family. Had everything we needed and to cap it off we were in the the most stunningly beautiful part of the world. Great memories...

Abbaye de Montserrat - Apartments
08199, Barcelona

This iconic Benedictine Abbey of Montserrat is surrounded by a vast, natural reserve and unusual rock formations. The views across Catalonia can only be described as 'spectacular. Even though the monastery is situated high in the clouds, there is much to see and do here. So much so that an overnight stay is well worth considering - even for the sunrise!

The Abat Marcet Apartments were constructed in the 1960s according to plans drawn up by local monk, Pere Busquets. The building is dedicated to Marcet, the abbot of Montserrat from 1912 to 1946. These days the apartments are fully modernised versions of the 'cells' where pilgrims were lodged for centuries, when the hostel at monastery was full.
Located in the Plaça Abat Oliba, and only steps from the magnificent basilica, guests here are assured of an incomparable stay in a peaceful, pleasant atmosphere.
The Abat Marcet Apartments are fully-equipped, modern suites designed to provide maximum comfort: bathroom, kitchen, heating, telephone and television. It is the ideal place to stay overnight with family or friends and to see all that Montserrat has to offer, at your own pace.

The Abat Marcet building contains 92 apartments, designed for 1, 2, 3 or 4 people, with total accommodation for up to 260 guests.
Restaurants, canteens and a bar are scattered around the complex and a shop stocks provisions for those who prefer to dine at home.

Guests are required to be fully vaccinated against COVID19.
