The nuns were so friendly, and accommodating and so helpful. I guess its easy to be upbeat when you live in a beautiful building in the midst of a magnificent forest. A car comes in handy, though all meals are available and for the active, there is plenty to do in the area. Great views, fabulous walks, comfortable accommodation, good food, engaging hosts and all at an affordable price. Disappointed we couldn't stay longer.
The Convent of St Mary is located in the heart of the Palatinate Forest, one of the largest in Europe. The German wine road meanders through the forest and in 1992 the forest was recognised by UNESCO as a bio-sphere reserve and important ecosystem.
The nearby town of Neustadt Weinstraße is famous for its delicious wine and the highlight of the year is the election of the German Wine-Queen. Walking trails surround the convent and with so many vineyards in the area guests can choose to walk a 'red' or a 'white wine' trail.
Kloster St Maria and the guesthouse of the Sisters of The Divine Saviour (Niederbronn Sisters) is an official 'stamp' station on the Way of St. James to Santiago de Compostella in Spain, and attracts pilgrims and hikers as well as mainstream tourists. The food is good, the beds are comfy and the sisters welcome visitors.
