More Information

New Norcia lies 130 km north-east of Perth and is accessible by sealed road. Bus 910 departs from the Perth Busport for New Norcia each day.

The Benedictine township is a cultural and spiritual treasure immersed in the Western Australian bush. Twenty seven of its buildings are classified by the National Trust and the town as a whole is registered on the National Estate. Daily tours of the entire town are conducted at 11.00 am and 1.30 pm.

From the earliest days of its foundation New Norcia has been focussed on education. The first Abbot, of New Norcia (Rosendo Salvado) established the Aboriginal girls and boys schools and the second Abbot of New Norcia, Fulgentius Torres built and opened the European girls and boys schools, which closed in 1991.

The Benedictine Community welcomes guests for prayer, retreat and spiritual renewal. Guests are accommodated in the monastery guesthouse, which is separate from the hotel. All meals are available.

Everyone is welcome to join the monks for the daily celebration of the Divine Office and Mass in the Monastery Oratory. On Sundays mass is celebrated in the Abbey Church.

Enjoy the Benedictine hospitality each Saturday at 4.30 pm when visitors to New Norcia are invited to meet one of the monks in the monastery parlour.

New Norcia WA 6509

The township of New Norcia lies 130 km north of Perth, the capital of Western Australia and is Australia's only fully working monastic town. New Norcia was founded by Spanish Benedictine monks in 1846 and was named after Norcia in Italy, the birthplace of St Benedict. There is much to see here and this popular tourist destination is replete with spectacular examples of early Australian history and heritage, architecture, as well as a museum, art gallery and a monastery shop. New Norcia is really famous for its olive oil which has been winning gold at the Perth Royal show. The olives are are picked by volunteers on a yearly basis.

Built in 1927 and nestled beneath gum trees on a rise overlooking the township, the Latin word Salve – Welcome – on the threshold tells you this is no ordinary country pub.The New Norcia Hotel was originally a hostel for the parents of the boarders at the New Norcia colleges, but is now a practical expression of the Benedictine tradition of hospitality. Its grand neo-classical style will take your breath away as you approach the double front doors. It has fifteen comfortable rooms, a restaurant, huge verandahs, a bar and a deck for you to watch nature slip by as you sip on a glass of wine, beer or champagne from the popular New Norcia range. The menu is specially created by our head chef who sources all the food locally.

Tourists and visitors to the area are welcome to stay here. Furnished in typical Aussie outback Aussie style, each guest room is fitted with overhead fans, a refrigerator and tea/coffee making facilities.
