Located near the colorful town of Karatu (otherwise known as 'Safari Junction'), in the the north of Tanzania, not far from Kilimanjaro Airport, St. Catherine's Monastery is within easy reach of Mt Kilimanjaro, safari parks and nature reserves. The monastery is managed by a community of hard working Benedictine Camaldoles sisters, who are more than happy to arrange a visit to a game park or to a local village to learn a little about Maasai and Tanzanian culture and tradition. And being long time locals they know the best and most reliable guides.
The monastery's ensuite guest rooms are simple, clean and comfortable, the showers run with hot water and all meals are available if required. The nuns grow their own vegetables in a large organic garden. Day visitors are welcome to pop in for a bite to eat.Take-away lunches can be arranged for those going on a day safari or other excursions. In fact nothing is too much trouble for the nuns or their kind and helpful staff.
The sisters share the money they receive from paying guests with the local community - another very good reason to stay here.
The monastery is fitted with Wi-fi. in communal areas and secure car parking is available.
