The Cittadella Ecumenica lies in an ancient convent, established by the Capuchin Order in 1592. The convent is situated on a small hill on the edge of the town of Cappuccini di Riano on the outskirts of Rome. The hill, known as Cappuccini Hill was once the resting place of St Francis during his long walk from Assisi to Rome.
The enormous cittadella overlooks the little town and since the time of St Francis the hill has always been a place of prayer. In 1951 the property was sold to Monsignor Giulio M. Penitenti, who established a new religious foundation, (La Nostra Famiglia Religiosa de Ecumenica) within the walls of the convent.
Known as the ‘Ecumenical Family’ and comprised of priests, nuns and lay people, the complex has been divided into two separate sections. One section is a centre for spirituality for the use of the religious men and women who live here and a place of welcome for visiting religious. Another section has been converted into a hospitality house catering for travellers and pilgrims.
